Mexican Solidarity Protest - 29 June, Sydney Opera House

About 1 month ago, a para military siege of 3000
police was had on a demonstration of 300 in Atenco,
Mexico. The demonstration was defending an
established market space for indigenous flower sellers. About
180 people where arrested and jailed, 2 people killed,
houses raided and 39 out of 40 women arrested where
raped or assaulted.

Only 2 weeks after this, another para military
operation on a teacher’s strike of about 750 000
occurred in Oaxaca, Mexico. Here, it is estimated
that between 4 and 11 people where killed, including
children, around 100 people injured, with countless
others incarcerated and disappeared. The teachers
where demonstrating for better wages and conditions,
but also about the many activists that are being
incarcerated and disappeared.

On Thursday the 29th of June, the Mexico/Australia
Solidarity Network will be having an action against
this repression. We are meeting at 1pm on the Opera
House steps.

We are demanding that the political prisoners be
released.

We will also be vocalising our support for the 'Otra
Campana', a campaign initiated by the Zapatistas to
unite the left in Mexico on an anti-capitalist
basis,
which seeks to achieve its goals through bottom-up
struggle.

Please come and show solidarity to the people of
Mexico who are engaging in a meaningful, yet fairly
violent, struggle against the Mexican state and
neo-liberalism.
