Note: NO other group was more solid on May Day 2004 and again2006
than the Port Troqueros and our fellow troqueros intrastate and
interstate including Phoenix and Las Vegas. It was a complete shutdown
of international commerce. When we shut down everyone else has to.
Amerika shuts down!

---------------------------------------------
From the Port of Aztlan,
Our Magonista local, the Los Angeles Ricardo Flores Magon branch of the
Industrial Workers of the World, will be present with our struggling
community. But, it is not in our nature to pursue a solution with
political power, but with theonlypower that we truly have, the power
to withhold our labor. It appears, based on what is transpiring in
the teleconferences, that quite possibly the Feb. 3 conference will
turn into a free-for-all much like the 1977 conference in San Antonio.
Nonetheless, it is imperative that we all support theconference
happening and attend. Yes, the resolutions will be important but
mostimportant will be the ability tobecome acquainted with one
another and network in a massive communion of dedication to the
immigrant and worker movement. May Day 2007 will happen, let there be
no doubt! The Call will be made this February 3.
The Wobblies of the Port of Aztlan will be present for this historical
CALL. We will invite our fellow workers to show up at noon on Saturday
for a troquero caucus and then we will jointly participate in a labor
workshop. And that is it! We need confirmation that the agenda will
provide for such participation prior to our next branch meeting on
January 17. Otherwise, we willhave to consider our options. WE will
not invite our fellow workers to attendachurch sermon nor a theatric
event hosted by politicians. WE will attend the conference with the
intention of offering our mutual aid and solidarity withother fellow
workers and with our migrant community.
May those that go with their political agendas or to self-promote fight
like dogs in the morning session or at night or wait until everyone
leaves and then pass all the damm resloutions that they want, just like
in San Antonio 1977. But we, as workers, will attend to prepare for a
General Strike and we ask that ablock of time be allotted/dedicated
beginningafter the lunch hour on Saturday followed by a workshop to
prepare for the General Strike, to prepare for the historical week.
Otherwise, if the workers are not permitted to prepare due to the
egoism of our progressive"leaders" or the pawns ofmainstream
politicians, then the Port Troqueros (truck drivers) will be forced to
network with fellow workers through other means, possibly calling for a
caucus down the street at McCarthur Park. WE willNOT disrupt the
important business of the politiciansat the conference.
WE hope that the politicians of the movement take into consideration
the workers and to understand that it is not our desire to attend a
conference to hear politician after politician tell us that we are
screwed. WE know that already! WE come to the conference to prepare
for direct action and ask for and offermutual aid on a national and
trans-national level.
Regardless of the outocme of thesetelephone conferences which we are
monitoring, the troqueros of the Port of Aztlan (Los Angeles/Long
Beach) will be present with our community in struggle!!!
In solidarity!

contemplar nuestras opciones.

The two current HOT issues are the raiding possibility by business
unions using environmental politics and the TPS issue in the TWIC
program.
TWIC:
Transportation Workers Identification Credential
Estimates are that as many as 1/3 of port troqueros have a TPS permit,
not a mica, but a temporary card that is renewed for 6, 12, or 18 month
periods. The TWIC card will be required for all workers to enter the
Ports and is valid for 5 years. TPS drivers will be initially denied a
TWIC card and will have to engage in a waiver process which will
include a letter from the employer. NO company is gonna sign an
affidavit saying that it is the employer. Details are pending as we
await for cfr49 sec. 1515 to be published with the final requirements
for obtaining the waiver. Until then, the only hope for TPS recipients
is for the trucking companies to accept the employment status or to
have a National Amnesty to include TPS recipients and give them a
MICA. The only power that the 10,000 port troqueros have is to shut
the harbor down for a week in attempt to convince the chingones in
Washington DC to grant the amnesty.
Environment
Almostall of the 10,000 trucks working thePort will not be able to
meet the stringent emissionsrequirements set by theARB by the year
2012. A lot of money is being thrown around and collectives atkey
companies are already awarethat the Port of LongBeachintends on
buying 500 trucks immediately. The fear spreading in the harbor is
thatLowenthal raiding politics will assure that theterminals get the
trucks and that the ILWU will again attempt to use nepotism to fuck the
troqueros out of jurisdiction and their livelihoods. They will have
their family members drive those trucks. Anotherconcern is that the
Teamsters will somehow cut a deal in order to get their hueso "bone" as
well. This is a very real concern based on the "historical Teamster
contract with Maritech..." a yellow-dog contract in the most classic
sense. The workers know that they must unite and fight, not for the
trucks, but for the work. Ask any troquero, "what do you want? A new
truck, or a goodpaying job?" Guess what the answer always is????
These two issues will fuel a COMPLETE SHUT DOWNof the Port of Aztlan
for the week of May Day 2007 and will lead to a labor showdown the
following year duringMay Day 2008, a month before the next ILWU/PMA
labor contract. The ILWU will have to learn what "A injury to one is
an injury to all" really means. The Teamsters will have to reconsider
their business union antics and corporate campaigns. The troqueros
will have to self-organize with the support of the IWW and will
realize that they always have had the POWER just as Siddharthaand
Dorothy had to realize that they alwayswore the red ruby slippers!
WE will be hammering away on those two issues for the next 4 months and
then will promote a troquero takeover of the Los Angeles harbor for May
Day 2008. WE demand:
General Amnesty for all migrants, and
the labor rights that we were promised during the last amnesty 20 years
ago.
If we have to take down the transportation industry and its'
domesticated business unions, SO BE IT!
In solidarity with the workers,
ernie
