The only people who talk about class based politics these days in
federal parliament are Tony Abbott and Peter Costello the two ultra
conservative contenders for the top job. Both of these 'good buddies'
from student days at Sydney Uni are on Hansard lecturing the country
that the class war is over and its time to move on. At the same time
they are throwing every thing they have in their power into locking
the country down against its own work class resistance.
The new Terrorism laws that Howard wants in place before Xmas will
allow police to snatch people from the streets and hold them without
charge or a warrant for up to 14 days. Control Orders will allow the
wallopers to place people under house arrest with electronic tracking
devices for up to 12 months. Most offensive however a rewritten charge
of sedition is to be enacted that is so broad that the ACT government
believes it may see people imprisoned for private conversations
critical of government foreign policy.
New laws that allow employers to sue individual workers and unions for
profits lost during industrial disputes will pit multi million dollar
corporations against individual workers in a court system established,
operated and run by big business and big politic. Secret ballots
before industrial action will take up to six weeks before approval
with the right to lock out workers taking less than six days.
The Howard government knows that workers simply wont put up with rules
that turn us into slaves and thats why laws that criminalise standing
up for your rights are being rammed through parliament with just one
day of scrutiny by the senate. Every single piece of Howards Terrorism
legislation can be used against activists like IWW members and the
only way we can deal with this is to agitate, educate and organise.
Howard says that ASIO will be doubled in size,
have burglary, surveillance and arrest powers
and even shoot to kill authorisation.
Be alert ! Be alarmed !
As we free trade with the Chinese capitalists and Asia in general we
seem to be lurching towards the Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia,
Thailand, Chinese etc regional Authoritarian regimes police states.
Given our origins in convict labour from Britland and since WWII the
dominant culture of American market forces ideology
the situation requires some resistance by civil disobedience,
industrial direct action and this will mean criminalisation of
associations eg deregistration of unions.
As with mandatory detention for asylum seekers the main thrust of
union-busting has in the past been done by the Alternative Liberal
Party.
So even if Howards gets ousted will Beazley Inc be any better?

They lied to us about Weapons of Mass Destruction, they lied to us
about Children Overboard and now they want us to trust them when they
say these new laws are for our own safety!!
